What To Do In Case Of Fire

In the case of a fire you should do the following;

Stop in a safe manner – don’t panic!  There is time to steer to a place of safety and you should make sure that you check your mirrors and indicate before changing speed or direction.  Depending on where the fire is on the vehicle some systems may not be working properly so use the controls gently and come to a gentle halt.

Select the correct fire extinguisher – the examiner will give you a choice, select powder.  Though CO2 can be used on electrical fires, you will not have one on a vehicle.  Powder is suitable for all risks.

Electrically isolate the vehicle – for some vehicles this will mean taking the key out of the ignition.  Other vehicles will have an isolator switch, either in the cab or near the battery.

Summon assistance – in any situation involving fire on a commercial vehicle contact both the police and the fire brigade.  Don’t forget to tell the examiner that you would do this.
